If your roof becomes damaged or dirty, it can lead to leaks, excessive wearing and other problems that you may not immediately be aware of. You should be taking steps to maintain your roof and keep it in good condition to ensure that you do not have major roofing problems to deal with. We’re going to show you a few ways you can maintain your roof and keep it looking its best.
Examine the Roof Regularly
Don’t just wait for signs of leaking and damage from inside tour home, on your ceiling. Instead, take the initiative and check out the roof from time to time for yourself. Perform a visual inspection every so often to make sure that everything is in good shape. If you simply check out the roof after every severe storm and keep an eye out for signs of damage, then you can catch problems in their early stages and prevent them from snowballing into much larger problems.
It’s not a bad idea to have a professional come and inspect the roof for you every so often as well. Professional inspections should happen at least once a year, and you should be checking roof on our own every month and after you suspect damage from falling branches or a severe storm.
Clean Off Your Roof
One of the most important parts of roof maintenance is to keep your roof and gutters clean.
Sticks, leaves and even excess water all need to be cleaned off to ensure that your roof does not get weighed down. Debris can cause damage to the gutters and edges of the roof most often, but even debris laying on the middle of the roof can cause problems. It can lead to corrosion or excess weight on the roof, which causes leaks and other problems.
You’ll most often find debris in the gutters, and if the gutters are not cleaned out, then the debris can wash onto the roof and damage it. Blocked gutters can cause flooding on your roof as well and encourage pests to come into your home or damage your roof, as debris makes for a nice place for them to build their homes and hide.
You can wash off your roof and clear out your gutters using a hose, and you can even do that from the ground, in many cases. If you get up on the roof or stand on a ladder to clean your roof, you can do a more thorough job. Some people use a broom to clean their roof, getting on top of the roof to ensure that they clear off all debris.
Take Care of the Attic
Your attic’s cleanliness and insulation affect your roof as well. Part of maintaining your roof is ensuring that it doesn’t get too hot or have a lot of condensation trapped underneath it, and having the right kind of insulation placed in your attic can make the difference there. You should also keep items in the attic clear of the ceiling and ensure there is room for air to pass between the ceiling and floor in the attic.
